ST. CHARLES PARISH, La. -- Louisiana State Police are investigating a fatal crash that killed three people and injured two early Sunday morning. Authorities believe speed and impairment were factors in the fatal crash, according to a release from police.
The crash occurred just before 2 a.m. on Airline Highway, near the intersection of Prospect Avenue in Norco, Trooper Melissa Matey, a spokesperson for Louisiana State Police, said in a statement.
Jennifer Englade, 40, of LaPlace, was headed north of Airline Highway when she crossed a raised median and struck a vehicle driven by Romishe Mejia-Fequie, 23, of Harvey, Matey said.
Mejia-Fequie was pronounced dead on the scene, Matey said, as was the front passenger in Englade's car, Joshua Jones, 29, of Sulphur, who was ejected from the car. Esther Centeno, 20, of Bridge City, the right rear passenger in Mejia-Fequie's also died on the scene. Matey noted that Centeno was pregnant.
Mejia Medena, 20, of Harvey, who was seated in the front seat of Mejia-Fequier's car, suffered critical injuries. Englade was also injured, Matey said. Both were taken to Interim LSU Public Hospital Level 1 Trauma Center in New Orleans.
"Speed and impairment are suspected as factors of the crash," Matey said in a statement. "Blood was drawn from Englade and will be submitted to the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab for toxicology analysis. Impairment is not suspected for Romishe Mejia-Fequier. However, toxicology results are pending an autopsy."
The crash remains under investigation and criminal charges are pending.
