TYLERTOWN, Ms. - Friday's storms didn't help a Mississippi animal shelter trying to clean up the mess left by Thursday's storms.
The St. Francis Animal Sanctuary in Tylertown was badly damaged by high winds and heavy rains. One dog was killed, a few injured and dozens of others were scattered because their homes at the no-kill facility were torn apart.
"Well we have the building back up front that was destroyed, two buildings back up front there actually," said Kandra Mahe, a shelter employee. "The office trailer has damage to it, we've got yards that are damaged, part of the new medical facility has been damaged."
Employees and volunteers have worked tirelessly to pile up debris, patch up fences and make the animals comfortable with that they have left. But the burden isn't on the shelter staff alone. Support is pouring in from across the South. One of those supporters, the St. Tammany Parish Humane Society, didn't hesitate to pack-up surplus supplies and ask the community for donations. They're stepping up because the facility was a haven for homeless animals and hopeless rescue organizations after Hurricane Katrina.
"Just being able to give back to them now is just so crucial," said Vicky Kreeger, the executive director of the St. Tammany Parish Humane Society.
It's a favor St. Francis never thought it would need re-paid.
Kiki Bryd, with St. Francis said, "Just can't express, everybody been so supportive. It takes everybody to get together and work at this."
The St. Tammany Humane Society and the Metairie Small Animal Hospital are two drop-off locations for any donations. A list of what's needed is below:
