NEW ORLEANS -- A storm system dumped several inches of rain on parts of southeastern Louisana, flooding streets in the New Orleans area and some homes in St. John Parish, prompting officials to close schools for the day in St. John the Baptist Parish.

Water did get into several homes in Reserve, according to St. John Chief Administrative Officer Buddy Boe, though the exact number and the amount was unknown.

Widespread street flooding was reported in metro New Orleans, especially in Mid-City and Algiers. In Edgard, St. John officials said Tuesday morning that they decided to close schools because there was standing water on many roads and because forecasts called for more rain.

Storms moved across southeastern Louisiana late Monday and early Tuesday. More than four inches of rain was recorded in some parts of the New Orleans area. And forecasts called for more storms -- some possibly severe -- on Tuesday.

The storms also casued scattered power outages. Entergy Corp. reported more than 4,000 customers without power as of 7 a.m. Tuesday.

Power outages

As of 12 p.m. in Jefferson Parish, there are 55 people hundred people without service. In Orleans Parish, 1,000 customers are without power.
