NEW ORLEANS - The suspect wanted in the shooting death of 14-year-old Edward Barton was arrested Wednesday, turning himself over to authorities by going to his attorney's office, police said.

Thirty-one-year-old Milton Bangham will be booked with second-degree murder and is now in NOPD custody, police report. Bangham went to his attorney’s office downtown where the NOPD's Violent Offenders Warrant Squad went to pick him up.

NOPD Superintendent Ronal Serpas said Bangham has 10 felony arrests on his record and 40 misdemeanor charges.

"He (Bangham) has been arrested for illegal firearms; he has been on probation more than once for crack and meth; he's been arrested for domestic violence; he's been arrested for breaking into people's houses; he's been arrested for resisting an officer; he's been arrested for trespassing, assault and simple battery," Serpas said. "Mr. Bangham has no business being on the streets of the city of New Orleans."

According to police, the victim was shot several times near Sixth Street and Danneel around 5:45 p.m. Sunday. He was rushed to the hospital, where he later died.

"The death of anyone on the streets of New Orleans is tragic," Mayor Mitch Landrieu said, "but when it is a 14-year-old boy, who is just sitting on stoop, this brings us into focus and, hopefully, ignite the passions of the people to continue to say, 'Enough is enough.'"
