NEW ORLEANS -- The U.S. Coast Guard says it will take 10 to 12 days to cap a wellhead that is leaking 33 barrels a day near Barataria Bay.
Officials had originally said the abandoned well would be capped as early as Wednesday, but the now that date has been pushed back.
While the flow rate of the well is estimated at 33 barrels a day, much lower than the rate of the BP oil spill before it was capped, officials say the Coast Guard is responding as if hundreds of barrels a day were spewing from the well.
Eighteen boats and 71 people are on sight working the incident. 10,500 feet of containment boom and 3,000 feet of absorbent boom have been deployed, and officials say more boom is on the way.
