NEW ORLEANS -- Legendary Treme Brass Band leader and drummer Uncle Lionel Batiste passed away Sunday morning. He was 80.

The iconic musician had fallen ill earlier this month.

"It is with deep sadness that we inform the New Orleans community of the passing of our beloved 'Uncle Lionel' this morning at Ochsner Hospital," said Karen Williams, Batiste's daughter. "He was surrounded by his family and loved ones and transitioned peacefully. Uncle Lionel was 80 years old. The family wishes to extend its deep gratitude for the kindness and love shown during his illness."

A longtime fixture in the New Orleans music scene, Batiste and his signature strutting style had made him one of the city’s most recognizable stars.

Funeral arrangements have not been finalized.

A memorial fund has been set up for the medical and funeral expenses for Uncle Lionel Uncle. Donations can be made to the "Uncle Lionel Memorial Fund" at any Liberty Bank and Trust Branch.
