NEW ORLEANS – Police arrested two men, including Tulane standout linebacker Trent Mackey, in connection with a home invasion near the Tulane campus, with Mackey arrested for allegedly setting up the crime and pretending to be a victim, according to the New Orleans Police Department.
Robert Murray, 19, and Mackey, 22, were booked with armed robbery, according to police. The home invasion occurred in the 600 block of Broadway Street on July 12 around 1:30 p.m.
A 20-year-old Tulane student and Mackey, a linebacker for Tulane, were inside the woman’s second-floor apartment, when two assailants barged in, said a statement from the NOPD.
According to police, Murray and an unknown assailant got in the home through an unlocked front door. The woman was put on the floor at gunpoint, and Mackey spoke to the assailants while they were inside the apartment. The two suspects then left casually with the woman’s laptop, cell phone and purse.
“Today, Murray was arrested and agreed to a taped statement. In the statement, Murray implicated Trent Mackey as the person who orchestrated the incident. The detectives investigated the information and arrested Trent Mackey. Mackey did not cooperate with the detectives and elected to claim his 5th Amendments Rights,” said a statement from the NOPD.
Police are still working to identify the third suspect in the incident.
Mackey is a red-shirt senior at Tulane. He played for the Green Wave in 2010 and 2011, after transfering from Duke. Mackey was selected as the preseason Defensive Player of the Year in Confrence USA.
