NEW ORLEANS -- Rapper Lil Wayne has caused a firestorm of criticism after he was seen on video stepping on the American flag.

The video, shot in New Orleans, is for his new song "God Bless Amerika."

The footage was obtained by TMZ.

In the video, Lil Wayne is seen rapping when a flag is dropped in front of him. He then proceeds to continue rapping while jumping and walking on the flag.

After the incident, Lil Wayne tweeted, "I didn't step on the flag on purpose! It's a scene in a video where the flag drops behind me and after it drop it's just there as I perform."

The song has a verse where the rapper rhymes, "My country 'tis of thee / Sweet land of kill 'em all and let 'em die / God bless Amerika / This ole godless Amerika (sic)."
