VIOLET, La. — A video of a female pit bull being “savagely beaten” before being smashed into the floor led to the arrest of a Violet man, authorities said Monday.
Asani Woods, 21, was taken into custody last week and charged with aggravated cruelty to a dog after authorities said they observed the video on a drug suspect’s phone.
According to St. Bernard Parish Sheriff’s Office spokesman Steve Cannizaro, Woods was seen on a cell phone video from December that showed he had “savagely beaten” the dog to the head and body. All the while, the dog whimpered and cried.
Cannizaro said the video eventually shows Woods picking up the dog before he “smashed her to the floor.”
Upon questioning, Woods said that he was disciplining his dog, which had created a mess in the kitchen, Cannizaro said.
Woods told authorities he took the dog to the Westbank office of the ASPCA. Cannizaro said further investigation showed the dog survived the attack, but was brought back to the ASPCA in January, where it was euthanized because Woods said the dog was overly aggressive.
The video was found after authorities arrested Johnny Dominick on drug charges, said Cannizaro, who added that the 21-year-old admitted to taping the dog-beating.
