WWL-TV and The New Orleans Advocate have earned national recognition in the annual Investigative Reporters and Editors Awards contest, for a joint investigation into the Tulane University legislative scholarship program.
Eyewitness Investigator Mike Perlstein and Gordon Russell, the New Orleans Advocate's managing editor for investigations, were honored in the multiplatform journalism category.
The entry consisted of broadcast, print and online work in 2013, exposing problems and inconsistencies in the awarding of Tulane scholarships by state lawmakers, as part of a 120-year-old deal between the state and Tulane. The joint investigation by WWL-TV and Advocate showed scholarships being awarded to insiders and politically-connected friends and family members.
The series of reports has prompted legislation to be considered in this year's legislative session which calls for reforms to the program.
Other national IRE Award winners this year include ProPublica, Reuters, CNN, 60 Minutes and WFAA, WWL-TV's sister station in Dallas.
