NEW ORLEANS -- A Gert Town woman accused of killing her two children in October 2012 has pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity, according to court records.

Chelsea Thornton, 23, is facing two first degree murder charges in the deaths of her two children, Kendall Adams and Kelsey Adams.

The 3-year-old boy and 4-year-old girl were found dead in a bathtub inside a Gert Town apartment in the 3300 block of Audubon Court. Kendall had been shot and Kelsey drowned, according to police.

Her family has previously said Thornton has a history of mental illness. Her mother told Eyewitness News that Thornton has been treated for both a bipolar disorder and schizophrenia but had stopped taking her medicine.

A discovery hearing is set for March 13.
