METAIRIE, La. -- Authorities say a woman was hurt when she was thrown from a boat that hit the Lake Pontchartrain Causeway Bridge Friday morning.
According to Jefferson Parish's John Fortunato, around 10 a.m., the JPSO 911 Center received a call from a man reporting he was involved in a boating accident in Lake Ponchatrain.
The caller told the operator he was operating his 20-foot fishing boat with his wife and four additional family members on-board, when he apparently lost steering control of the boat and struck the northbound lane piling of the Causeway Bridge, near mile marker one.
The wife was taken from the vessel and transported to University Hospital, and her injuries are unknown at this time.
All remaining passengers on the boat were taken to the Bonnabel boat launch.
The fishing boat was also towed to the Bonnabel boat launch.
Carlton Dufrechou, General Manager for the Causeway Bridge, said that because of the accident, the northbound side of the bridge was closed for a short time after the boat hit the southbound bridge.
Dufrechou added that the boat crossed beneath the northbound span about a mile from the Southshore, and as it was moving beneath the southbound span, it hit a piling, tossing at least two people from the boat.
The Causeway Bridge has since been reopened.
