In St. Charles Parish, a 68-year-old man is behind bars, charged with manslaughter, after the sheriff says he killed a young Destrehan man over an argument about money.
And a relative says the shooting happened right in front of his grand mother.
Families who live in Destrehan, in the 3700 block of Tara Drive, are in disbelief that their neighbor Weston Keller, 25, is gone.
"Like 10, 15 minutes before it happened, Weston was out here playing with our kids and he was like a big brother to our kids," said neighbor and friend, Alyse Gitz.
Moments later, a little past 5:00 Thursday evening, Weston was dead from a single gun shot wound to the chest.
"The perpetrator Donald Daughdrill, 68-years-old, was on scene and was immediately detained by deputies. He was there at the scene, had the weapon and we recovered the weapon at that point as well," said Sheriff Greg Champagne of St. Charles Parish.
Sheriff Champagne says Daughdrill had health problems and was living with Weston and his 74-year-old grandmother in her home for the last year and a half. Police say there are allegations that Daughdrill accused Weston of stealing his cash and during an argument when Daughdrill grabbed his handgun and shot Weston. That's when his grandmother called 911. A relative at the house said off camera, Weston's grand mother was distraught after seeing it all unfold.
Friends don't think he would steal.
"In my heart, I don't think he was , he would steal from anyone. He would tell me all the time, he's like, 'I don't like being accused of being a liar. You know, I work hard for what I have.' So that's why I can't believe anything else," said Gitz.
Another neighbor in the quiet neighborhood said she was just too sad to go on camera as she was shedding many tears, but she said Weston was liked by everyone and he had just suffered his own loss recently. Two years ago his mother, who was a volleyball coach at Destrehan High, had passed away from cancer.
Neighbors say Weston had also lost twins at birth. Now a family is grieving another.
Donald Daughdrill's bond is set at a half million dollars.
