PHILADELPHIA (AP) — The SS United States is getting a below-the-deck makeover as it is prepared for a new life as a dockside attraction.

The idea is to make the ship more attractive for developers and to raise money by selling obsolete materials hidden in the vessel's guts.

The SS United States was the fastest passenger-carrying ocean liner ever to cross the Atlantic, but it's been out of service since 1969. Since then, it's been docked and awaiting a new life.

Its nonprofit owner, the SS United States Conservancy, wants to turn part of the 990-foot-long ship into a museum and develop the rest for other uses, possibly a hotel, restaurants or banquet facilities.
