The Mother’s Day shootings are still fresh in the memories of many New Orleanians, but more so for Gambit cultural reporter Deb Cotton. And that’s the topic of this week’s Commentary by Eyewitness News Political Analyst and Gambit columnist Clancy DuBos.

NEW ORELANS -- The Mother’s Day shootings happened only 10 weeks ago, and violence has claimed more local lives since then. But lest we forget, 19 people were shot that day. One more was hurt in the chaos that followed.

No one was injured worse than my Gambit colleague, cultural correspondent Deb Cotton. Deb only recently came home from the hospital, and she faces a long, expensive recovery.

Her many contributions to the local cultural scene are just one reason why her friends are organizing a fundraiser for Deb this Friday, July 26, at the Uptown music club Gasa Gasa.

Tickets are just $10, and several performers — including DJ Soul Sister — are helping raise money for Deb’s recovery. All proceeds will go toward her medical expenses. There’s also a fundraising web site for Deb that you can find here.

I’ve said before that we all have to take ownership of New Orleans’ crime problem. Helping crime victims, like Deb and others, is one way to do that.
