New York Governor Andrew Cuomo is learning how to deal with post-hurricane issues these days. He recently appointed former New Orleans Recovery Czar Ed Blakely to a recovery commission in the wake of Hurricane Sandy. That’s the topic of this week’s Commentary by Eyewitness News Political Analyst and Gambit columnist Clancy DuBos.

We all know that hurricanes can cause post-traumatic stress. When I read that New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo appointed former New Orleans “Recovery Czar” Ed Blakely to a special commission on emergency response, I figured Governor Cuomo needed some rest.

Nothing else explains appointing Mr. Cranes-in-the-Sky to anything resembling a position of responsibility, especially after Blakely failed so spectacularly here in New Orleans. The only things Blakely succeeded at were over-charging us for his alleged services, and taking credit for things that either didn’t happen or happened because of the efforts of others.

One more thing Blakely was good at: trash talking the very people whose lives he was supposed to improve. Remember when he called us lazy, racist and backward? That was after we paid him hundreds of thousands of dollars to organize and administer our city’s recovery — something he later said he didn’t have time to do.

Now Blakely talks about not rebuilding coastal communities. Excuse me, but Blakely lives in Sydney, Australia — a coastal community.

I know Governor Cuomo gets lots of advice, but I’m going to offer him some more: Governor, don’t let Ed Blakely anywhere near New York, unless he’s paying his own way as a tourist. If you do anything else, you do so at your own — and New York’s — great peril.
