Visitors have already begun pouring into New Orleans for a series of high-profile sporting events, including the Sugar Bowl, the Saints first playoff game and the BCS championship game.

If there is such a thing as a goose that laid a golden egg for New Orleans, it would have to be tourism.
The Mississippi River is why New Orleans was founded, but the fact that millions of visitors come here every year gives us all a chance to really live here.
That’s why city NOPD has already beefed up security downtown.
Some may complain that we shouldn’t protect tourists at the expense of locals, and they’re right. But in this case, N-O-P-D says neighborhoods will NOT see a drop in patrols.
A new staffing strategy put in place by Chief Ronal Serpas doubled the number of cops downtown for New Year’s Eve, and it worked. Downtown was loud, but peaceful.
The simple truth is, making tourists feel safe has to be part of the city’s marketing plan, especially when our city leads the nation in murders per capita.
As the Saints and LSU march toward championships, it would be nice to see New Orleans lose the title of Murder Capital of the U.S.A.
But that’s going to take a lot more than police presence.
