The long-term outlook for Common Core is the topic of this week’s Commentary by Eyewitness News Political Analyst and Gambit columnist Clancy DuBos.

Common Core appears to be as imperfect as it is ambitious. Its rollout in Louisiana was troubled, to say the least. But the program’s flaws don’t justify killing it so soon.

The better course of action is to fix it. That’s why a bipartisan group of state lawmakers passed – overwhelmingly – a compromise bill to give educators two more years to implement Common Core.

Gov. Bobby Jindal vetoed that bill. He now opposes Common Core, even though he once championed it. Now he wants the state board of education to come up with, quote, Plan B. He offers no plan of his own.

That may suit the governor’s presidential ambitions, but if he were being graded on the substance of his Common Core performance, he’d get an “F.” It’s disingenuous to ask Common Core’s biggest supporters to come up with an alternative to it.

Common Core’s fate may have to be decided in court. That means judges, not educators, will decide how best to teach Louisiana’s children.

That is a poor excuse indeed for “Plan B.”
