NEW ORLEANS -- The AT&T crew showed up early Wednesday morning and went to work to install a new utility pole to replace the badly leaning one in this Lakeview alley.
The quick response was good news for worried neighbors. The word spread quickly.
"And he said the poles are here, and I said you're kidding me, so we were thrilled to death," said neighbor Sandy Young.
The original pole has been leaning for some time, but more and more in recent months. Neighbors called AT&T, which owned the pole, beginning in June, because it was starting to push down one neighbor's fence. The power wires were dangling into back yards on one side. They were so taut on Cathy Turnage's house she was worried they would be pulled off the wall.
"I could even have a fire, huh?" Turnage said. "I don't need to rebuild my house."
"We've been asking for three months, but this has been like this for a long time," said Sandy. "I was worried that a big gust of wind, a terrible storm, and boom."
When I contacted AT&T Tuesday, an AT&T spokeswoman told me the company had made the decision to replace the pole Aug. 21, but they hadn't done anything.
However, when they heard how concerned the neighbors were, they made replacing that pole a top priority.
"I was in total denial. You are a miracle worker," Young said.
Now they are coordinating with the other utilities to move all the wires to the new pole, so the old one can be removed and the neighbors can relax.
"Total peace of mind," Young said.
