NEW ORLEANS - When Jessica Branigan sought a copy of her transcript from Delgado Community College to take new courses, she was told she had to repay an old student loan.
"I was very, very mad," said Branigan. "I was very upset that I wouldn't be able to go back to school, because this is what I want to do."
Jessica did apply for financial aid in early 2005, but said the paperwork she turned in repeatedly was never entered into the computers correctly.
"And then eventually I went to the City Park campus with the same paper, and then had them fill it out with me, and so I made sure everyting was right on it," she said. "They stamped it in front of me, and put it in the computer, and she said your check will be in in two weeks, and it never came in."
But Jessica says when she went back over six years later to try to straighten things out, she hit a brick wall.
"That it was in 2005," she said she was told, "and they have no way to go back and fix what happened in 2005."
That's when she first contacted the Action Line, and at first things looked good.
"I couldn't contain it, it was so exciting," she said.
However, she was told that she still had a hold on her balance.
So what happened? Well, Jessica first contacted me in January, and when I contacted Delgado officials, they said it had all been worked out,. But when she tried to actually get the transcrtipt in April, they told her she still owed the money. So she emailed me again, and this time, a Delgado vice chancellor got involved, and a solution was found.
"She was smiling right away when I gave her a call and told her that we were able to resolve her issue, she was ecstatic, and I will tell you it took me maybe a day to get on the phone and resolve the issue for her," said Delgado Vice Chancellor Dr. Arnel Cosey.
And they say the new Log On Louisiana computer system allows students to monitor their financial aid.
"I think it's super easy," said Delgado Senior Sonya Hill.
"I am going to school for pre-vet and biology, and I am so excited," Jessica Branigan concluded with a delighted laugh.
