NEW ORLEANS -- The red light at Chef Menteur Highway and Michoud Boulevard was knocked down weeks ago. For drivers on Michoud, and for those heading west on Chef Menteur, there are flashing red lights to warn them to stop at the busy intersection.
But there are no flashing lights for eastbound drivers on Chef, only stop signs, which many drivers don't see and speed right through.
"Early in the month of December, when I first noticed it was like this, and then I came back after the first of the year, and I noticed it was like this again, I said, 'Oh my God, somebody's going to get killed here,'" said Elmer Bahan. "That was why I emailed you."
Watch what happened as I talked to area restaurant owner Rusty Vucinovich.
"You just come up here for a minute, maybe two minutes, look at them, there they go whoom, right by baby," said Vucinovich.
"I've witnessed one wreck on the way home bringing my children from school," said Venetian Isles Civic Association Robby Knecht. "It happened right alongside of us."
But if people don't see the stop signs in broad daylight, what about at night, or when it is rainy or foggy?
Let's face it, a stop sign just won't properly protect this intersection. That's why so many people have contacted the Action Line.
So I'm getting in touch with those in charge, asking them to expedite the repairs on the stop light, but in the meantime put an extra light out here, a temporary light, to make sure that drivers know they have to stop.
"Some type of flashing light need to be out there until a permanent solution can be made," said Knecht.
"It's gonna take somebody to get killed before they really put some effort and some money into it," worried Vucinovich. "There's got to be some emergency money or something. This is a thoroughfare. That's an evacuation route man. That's crazy. Where's our mayor? Where y'at Mitch? Come on back out to the East man."
A city spokeswoman said they are looking into it. I'll let you know what they do.
