NEW ORLEANS - Police have arrested a 13-year-old boy minutes after he allegedly robbed a 53-year-old man with a BB gun in New Orleans East on Sunday.
The incident happened near the intersection of Bullard Avenue and Hayne Boulevard at about 11:20 a.m.
NOPD spokesman Officer Frank Robertson said the teen rode up to the victim while riding a bicycle and grabbed $30 out of his hand.
The boy fell off of his bike as he tried to flee, and the victim ran after him. Robertson said the victim claims the boy pointed a gun at him and told him to get back. The boy was able to escape on Hayne Boulevard.
About five minutes later, a responding officer saw a boy that matched the suspect's description near the intersection of Lafourche Street and Hayne Boulevard. He was placed under arrest after the victim was able to positively identify him.
Robertson said the weapon used in the crime was a BB gun that resembled a pistol.
The teen faces one charge of armed robbery.
Detectives are looking into whether the boy was connected to any other armed robberies in the area.
Because the suspect is a minor, his identity won't be released.
