CHALMETTE, La. - The FBI is investigating the death of a female inmate in the St. Bernard Parish Prison.
FBI spokesperson Mary Beth Romig confirmed that federal investigators are looking into the death of Nimali Henry, who died while in custody in the parish jail, as a criminal civil rights violation.
Family members told the New Orleans Advocate Henry had a heart condition that required medication.
On Apr. 1, Henry, 19, was found unresponsive on the floor of her cell at about 8 a.m., Sheriff James Pohlmann said. Deputies later pronounced her dead.
Henry was arrested March 21 after a disturbance at a home. Henry's death is the first of a St. Bernard Parish Prison inmate since 2012.
