NEW ORLEANS -- A child is fighting for his life after a fatal triple shooting Tuesday night in Mid-City. Police say shots rang out on Baudin Street off Carrollton Avenue, leaving two men dead.
Daymond Harris, 8, has had four surgeries since the shooting and is still hospitalized, according to his grandmother. About five children were playing outside when shooters opened fire, she said, and Harris was shot in the arm and stomach. He was shot running from the gunfire behind his sister.
"I'm about ready to leave New Orleans because I'm sick of this killing. Somebody's got to do something," said Lois Rickmon.
Her cries of grief could be heard across the Mid-City neighborhood. As homicide detectives processed the double murder scene, neighbors and strangers watched.
Rickmon says her 26-year-old nephew, Orlando was gunned down in a hail of bullets.
"He never bothered nobody. That boy never bothered anybody. All he was doing was try to make it. Why do they want to kill the good people?" Rickmon said.
The NOPD confirms that two men were shot and killed on a porch in the 4000 block of Baudin Street just before 6 p.m. Police had not released their names.
"Two men wearing hoodies walked up to two men on a porch and opened fire," said NOPD Superintendent Ronal Serpas.
Police also say those hooded gunmen ran from the scene and hopped into what may have been a red Chrysler minivan taking off towards Canal Street.
In the crossfire, Serpas said, the 8-year-old was hit.
"He's in the hospital in critical condition. He's being cared for. We have every reason to hope and prey that he'll be okay but we just don't know for sure yet," Serpas said.
The latest murders happened less than a block from where a 58-year-old man was shot and killed sitting on his front porch last May. Two teens were arrested in that murder.
As detectives investigate this latest violent triple shooting, one grieving aunt offered up a tearful plea to her nephew's killers.
"Whoever killed my nephew, come forward, because I know somebody knows something," said Rickmon.
