NEW ORLEANS – A cab driver was fatally shot in Treme during Thursday’s early morning hours, according to the New Orleans Police Department.

Around 1 a.m. officers were called out to an initial report of a vehicle crashing into a tree in the 900 block of North Johnson Street, police said.

Upon arrival, an unresponsive cabbie was found in the driver’s seat of an American Taxi, according to the NOPD.

The 35-year-old driver, identified as 35-year-old Sheicho Delbar, had been shot multiple times and was pronounced dead on the scene, police said.

Investigators are in the process of gathering evidence to identify the person(s) responsible and a motive.

WWLTV is looking into whether the cab was equipped with a security camera.

The incident marks the seventh murder of a cab driver in the New Orleans area within the last two years.

A recently created law says the murder of a taxi driver can lead to a death penalty prosecution.
