METAIRIE, La. — A 25-year-old Metairie woman pleaded guilty to manslaughter Monday for drowning her newborn baby in Lake Pontchartrain four years ago.
As part of her plea deal, Ciara Craig agreed to serve 12 years in prison, according to court records.
A Jefferson Parish jury previously convicted her of murder. A judge overturned the conviction, ruling that it was unclear if the baby girl was stillborn, or alive, when Craig placed her in the water.
She was set to be retried on those charges when she reached this plea deal for manslaughter.
Craig had confessed to giving birth at home. She said she believed the baby was dead. Her attorneys argued that she suffered from severe depression.
