NEW ORLEANS — Following a conviction for sexual assault, a Coast Guardsman was sentenced to 90 days confinement, along with being lowed in rank and discharged.

Petty Officer 3rd Class Joe Newmans, 22, was convicted of sexual assault and battery, according to the Coast Guard, stemming from an incident in Nov. 2012 at a home in New Orleans.

According to the Coast Guard, a woman, also a member of the Coast Guard, reported the crime on Nov. 30, 2012, a day after the incident.

In addition to the 90-day confinement, Newmans received reduction to E-1 -- the lowest enlisted paygrade -- and a bad conduct discharge.

Newmans was administratively assigned to Coast Guard Sector New Orleans.
