GRETNA, La. - Police said they shot two suspects who committed an armed robbery and then led officers on a chase while tossing money from their car early Sunday morning.
Police said two men robbed a convenience store in the 900 block of Lafayette Street around 2:25 a.m. and then led police on the chase that ended in gunfire in Algiers.
According to the police department, officers responding to the Lafayette St. crime scene saw a vehicle speeding away from the scene without lights on. As officers tried to stop the car, they said it sped up in excess of 100 miles per hour. Police continued the chase and the suspects' vehicle continued into Orleans Parish even as one of its tires began shredding.
Police said the driver, identified as Dale Brown, jumped from the moving vehicle and charged at police with an object in his hand. He was shot in the leg but still fled the scene. Police said he was caught by an officer and his K-9 dog. Brown was said to be suffering from dog bites in addition to the gunshot wound.
Another suspect, identified as Tramell LaFrance, also hopped out of the car and, according to police, eventually pointed a semi-automatic gun at officers. The officers shot and struck LaFrance who was taken to the hospital and remained in intensive care as of Monday afternoon.
Brown and LaFrance were charged with armed robbery. Two backseat passengers, Shawn Ward and Darren Robin, were apprehended inside of the vehicle. Ward was believed to have entered the convenience store with LaFrance. He was charged with armed robbery. Robin is believed to have waited in the car. He was charged with being a principal to armed robbery.
Both the Gretna Police and the NOPD are investigating as the robbery occurred in Gretna, but the shootings and arrests occurred in Orleans.
