MARRERO, La -- During a spate of vehicle burglaries Sunday morning, multiple weapons were taken from an unmarked New Orleans Police Department SWAT officer's vehicle, according to the Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office.
Between 3 and 5 a.m., five vehicles were burglarized in the 2500 block of Meadowlark and 2600 block of Sandpiper Circle in the Audubon Oaks subdivision, according to Col. John Fortunato, spokesman for the sheriff's office.
The SWAT officer's vehicle, 2008 Crown Victoria, was burglarized on Sandpiper. "Taken from within this vehicle, was a number of the SWAT officer’s departmental issued gear. This included a Colt M4 .223 Cal automatic assault rifle, a Glock .40 Cal semi-automatic handgun, a tactical entry vest along with a number of additional tactical items. All of this equipment was locked inside of the trunk of the aforementioned vehicle according to the NOPD officer," said a statement from Fortunato.
The NOPD is conducting an investigation as well. According to the NOPD spokesperson Remi Braden, "The officer allegedly broke a departmental Performance of Duty rule by leaving his equipment in the trunk of his vehicle."
The owners of the vehicles all claimed they believed they locked their cars, but investigators found no visible signs of forced entry into any of the burglarized vehicles, according to the sheriff's office.
