NEW ORLEANS - A New Orleans mom accused of murdering her two small children is getting a hearing to determine if she is competent to stand trial.
Thursday, Chelsea Thornton's attorney urged a lunacy hearing during an appearance in Orleans Criminal Court .
Police said in October that Thornton, 23, confessed to killing her 3-year-old son and 4-year-old daughter in a bath tub in their Gert Town apartment.
Her family said the woman has a history of mental illness. Her mother told Eyewitness News that Thornton has been treated for both a bipolar disorder and schizophrenia but had stopped taking her medicine.
While not commenting on this specific case, Dr. Leanne Truehart, the mental health director with St. Tammany Parish Coroner's Office, said withdrawing from treatment or services can be dangerous.
"For people that have severe mental illness, that is very important for them to take medication on a regular basis, to follow up with their mental health provider," said Dr.Truehart.
Thornton's lunacy hearing is now set for November 13 at 10 a.m.
