CHALMETTE, La. -- A 20-year-old man was booked on an armed robbery charge after he confessed to the St. Bernard Parish Sheriff's Office that he used a BB gun to hold up a Dollar General.
Matthew Hendershot, who lives several blocks from the store on Paris Road, was arrested for the Feb. 12 incident, according to the sheriff's office.
Hendershot, "confessed and led sheriff’s detectives to where he hid a back pack containing a BB gun he showed a store employee in the robbery, a hooded sweatshirt, a mask and hat used," said a statement from Steve Cannizaro, a spokesman for the sheriff's office.
The bicycle Hendershot used as a getaway vehicle was also recovered, but the stolen cash was gone, said the sheriff's office. He carried the BB gun in his waistband, showed it to a clerk and then forced the employee to fill a bag with money.
Henderson’s only previous arrest was a year ago for shoplifting in Chalmette. He is being held in St. Bernard Parish Prison and will have bond set in his case by a magistrate judge on Wednesday.
