JEFFERSON, La. -- Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office has charged a 22-year-old man with an aggravated rape and aggravated burglary that happened in 2009.
Arturio Rodriguez, 22, is currently being held in the Jefferson Parish Correctional Center.
JPSO spokesman Col. John Fortunato said the charges stem from an incident in February 2009 in the 1900 block of Faith Place in Gretna, where an unidentified 31-year-old woman was raped in her home with her children upstairs sleeping.
Fortunato said Rodriguez woke the victim up in the early morning hours as she slept with her 3-year-old and 5-year-old children in her bed. He then threatened her and her children if she didn't follow him downstairs.
She complied, and Rodriguez raped her in the living room before fleeing the scene, Fortunato said.
The victim said she didn't resist the attacker out of fear for her and her children's safety.
DNA evidence was collected at the scene and submitted for analysis, but it wasn't until Sept. 21 that it was used to prove the suspect's identity, Fortunato said. Rodriguez, who was already in jail on an unrelated charge, was then re-booked with aggravated rape and aggravated burglary.
Fortunato said Rodriguez was booked in November 2011 in a similar incident that happened in March 2009, when a 34-year-old woman was also raped in her home on S. Forest Lawn Drive in Gretna. Detectives noted "striking similarities" between the Forest Lawn Drive incident, and evidence collected at the scene matched Rodriguez's DNA.
