NEW ORLEANS – A Gert Town man is facing a first-degree murder charge for the death of his 2-month-old daughter, according to the New Orleans Police Department.
Micah Short, 21, was booked on a murder charge Tuesday for the death of daughter Macayla. The 2-month-old girl died Monday morning, according to police.
Police say Short and his wife took their daughter to the hospital after Short said he accidentally hit the girl’s head on the side of her crib after tripping with her in his arms.
The toddler, who relatives say was named Macayla, died at the hospital from what police are calling “blunt force trauma” to the head.
After being questioned by police again, NOPD says Short admitted to hitting his daughter because she was crying too much inside his grandmother’s home on Fern Street.
His brother told Eyewitness News what happened is out of character for the first-time father.
“Especially the murder part,” said Junior Short. “No one in our family are killers. He was more scared of getting in trouble than doing anything.”
Short was previously booked with second-degree cruelty and domestic abuse battery for a March incident with wife. After the coroner ruled the cause of death a homicide due to blunt force trauma to the baby’s head, police additionally booked Short with first-degree murder, according to police.
