HARVEY, La. -- There is a first-degree murder arrest warrant out for a Harvey man accused of killing a 6-year-old girl.
Ahlittia North vanished over the weekend. Her body was found in a trash bin not far from her apartment on Destrehan Avenue in the Woodmere neighborhood on the West Bank.
It was certainly a heartbreaking end to a desperate search for a little girl lost.
Sheriff Newell Normand said a relative of the family may have stabbed North to death and then dumped her body like a bag of garbage.
“A goose bumps, shock the conscious crime,” Normand said.
20-year-old Matthew Flugence, her stepfather’s nephew and frequent babysitter, is now accused of stabbing and beating her to death.
Jefferson Parish Coroner Dr. Gerry Cvitanovich says there was no obvious signs of sexual assault.
Ahlittia’s body was found early Tuesday morning, dumped in a trash bin about seven doors down from her house on Destrehan Avenue in Harvey.
Normand says deputies had previously checked all the trash cans and dumpsters in the area.
Over the weekend investigators found a pool of blood matching Ahlittia’s DNA in an abandoned building in her apartment complex.
In addition to Ahlittia’s murder, Flugence is also wanted for an unrelated sexual battery of an 11-year-old.
Flugence’s older brother Russell was arrested earlier Tuesday on an obstruction of justice charge.
