NEW ORLEANS-- New Orleans Police said an officer shot a robbery suspect who, along with another man, robbed a carwash on Claiborne Avenue, locked the victims in a storage shed and drove off in a car that belonged to one of the victims.
The shooting occurred in the 1600 block of South Rendon Street sometime just before 9 p.m. Saturday.
According to an account on Uptown Messenger, two suspects approached two people who were closing the carwash and used a gun to order them back into the business. Police said the suspects robbed the business and then forced the suspects into a storage shed before taking off in their cars.
An officer who was nearby saw the men leave and began giving chase, which ended on South Rendon where one of the suspects got out of the car he was driving and began to run on foot. At some point the officer fired a shot and hit the victim in the rear end. According to the Uptown Messenger's account, police weren't certain Saturday night as to why the officer fired a shot. A police spokesman said the officer also suffered some type of injury.
According to the Uptown Messenger, an assistant independent police monitor was on the scene since it was an officer-involved shooting.
