NEW ORLEANS – New Orleans police have arrested a woman in the beating death of a 3-month-old girl who allegedly hit the infant repeatedly after she wouldn't stop crying.
Angela Bernard, 39, was booked with first-degree murder and child neglect. She had previously been arrested on drug charges.
The incident happened in the 4600 block of Flake Avenue in New Orleans East.
NOPD spokeswoman Remi Braden said detectives approached Bernard Monday afternoon to ask more questions about the baby’s death. The coroner’s office had determined the infant, RyanJae Mitchell, had been murdered.
During questioning Bernard, who was the baby’s caretaker, admitted to hitting the child repeatedly because she wouldn’t stop crying, Braden said.
Just after 4:30 a.m. Sunday, Bernard called 911 to say the baby wasn’t breathing. She was unable to resuscitate the baby, who was later pronounced dead at the Tulane Medical Center.
The coroner said that the baby suffered from a lacerated liver, broken ribs on both sides of her body and widespread bruising to her head, face and chest. Braden said blood had even pooled under the baby’s eyes.
