NEW ORLEANS - One man was killed and another is in critical condition after a man who was riding in the back seat of the same car shot those in the front seat in an Algiers neighborhood Thursday morning, according to police.

The incident occurred around 11:15 a.m. in the 3400 block of Meadow Park Lane.

Benita Dussett lives three doors down from where the incident occurred.

"My son is at home. The police knocked on the door and they wanted to review the cameras," Dussett said of security cameras she and several neighbors have in front of their homes.

The NOPD found two shooting victims in the red Chevy Impala that crashed near her house. The 32-year-old driver was found dead after being shot multiple times including in the head. The passenger was found alive but in critical condition with several gunshot wounds including one to his cheek.

The NOPD believes the shooter knew the two victims. "Through interviews with witnesses we learned that the perpetrator was in the back seat of the vehicle and he jumped out in the neighborhood," said Lt. Gary Marchese.

Detectives are looking for an African-American male with a Mohawk-style haircut wearing a white shirt.

The SWAT team searched nearby abandoned houses in the direction where NOPD believes the suspect ran, after he shot the victims and jumped out of the car.

"It's scary, it's really scary," Dussett said. "It's not just here in this neighborhood it can happen in anyone's neighborhood. However, in this neighborhood it's been fairly quiet."

If you have any information call Crimestoppers at 504-822-1111.
