METAIRIE, La. – An argument at a party led to a shooting that left a Metairie man lying on the side of the road Saturday morning, according to Jefferson Parish Sheriff Newell Normand.
Cody Yelverton, 23, and Duane Croissant, 18, have been arrested in connection with the shooting death of Robert Mercadel, Jr., 26, whose body was found near his home by a driver around 4:30 a.m. The driver called 911 to report the finding.
Detectives conducted interviews and learned that the shooting stemmed from an altercation in Kenner, LA Cody Yelverton is said to have pulled a gun out and threatened Mercadal during a party on October 29, 2010.
Later that same night, the arrested suspects and the victim were riding in a vehicle near the 100 block of Hesper Ave in Metairie when the altercation escalated. It was at that time that Yelverton, while seated in the passenger seat of the vehicle, took out a weapon and fired it at Mercadal, striking him in the upper body, according to Normand.
Deputies said Croissant, who was driving the vehicle, assisted Yelverton in removing Mercadal from the back seat and placing him in the 300 block of Metairie Lawn. Investigators were called to the scene the morning of October 30, 2010 after the body was discovered.
Normand said both Yelverton and Croissant admitted to their participation in the Homicide Investigation.
Yelverton was arrested for one count of Second Degree Murder and is presently incarcerated at the Jefferson Parish Correction Center.
Duane Croissant was located at his residence in St. Rose La. He was arrested as a fugitive from Jefferson Parish and is awaiting transfer to Jefferson Parish where he will be arrested on one count of Second Degree Murder.
