NEW ORLEANS – New Orleans police are searching for a man wanted for a robbery at an Uptown store last month.

Luis Diaz, 37, is wanted for a simple robbery that happened Feb. 27 at Elio’s Wine Warehouse on Miro Street.

NOPD spokesman Officer Garry Flot said Diaz tried to pass off a counterfeit $50 bill at the store. The manager refused the bill and tried calling the police. At that point, Flot said, Diaz grabbed the phone from the manager’s hands and then fled into a white vehicle driven by an unknown woman.

While trying to get in the vehicle, a witness tried to apprehend Diaz. The witness was dragged by the getaway vehicle, Flot said, and the manager of Elio’s fired several gunshots at the vehicle’s tire and engine to try to stop it. No one was hit.

The witness was treated for minor injuries.

Flot said Detective Jerry Baldwin identified Diaz as the person responsible. He said detectives are still trying to determine the identity of the woman driver.
