VIOLET, La. -- A longtime secretary was booked on a felony theft charge by the St. Bernard Parish Sheriff's Office, accusing her of embezzling more than $100,000 since 2006 from Greater Mount Olive Missionary Baptist Church, according to a statement from Steve Cannizaro, a spokesperson for the sheriff's office.
Trinette Johnson, 39, of Violet, is the church secretary and account executive. Johnson surrendered to authorities Friday at the parish jail after a judge signed a warrant for her arrest on a felony theft charge, said Cannizaro.
"Johnson is accused of systematically misappropriating $101,872 of church funds by means of fraudulent conduct and practices since August 16, 2006," said a statement from the sheriff's office.
Police said an investigation was launched by the sheriff's office after a letter signed by 33 members of the church was presented to the sheriff's office, saying church officials wanted to pursue criminal charges because funds were missing.
In addition, the church officials gave the sheriff's office bank records dating back to March 2006, along with information from a forensic specialist, said the sheriff's office. The report showed that Johnson had allegedly misappropriated church funds.
Johnson is expected to be released on bond set at $10,000.
