VIOLET, La. -- A man who destroyed evidence connected to a fatal drug overdose case where a was arrested Wednesday, authorities said.

Thirty-five-year-old Lance Espadron reported to deputies that he saw Rodney Sanchez stumbling blocks from his Guerra Drive household and drove Sanchez home to save his life,St. Bernard Sheriff James Pohlman said.

Espadron also told deputies he attempted to revive Sanchez when he collapsed by using a syringe found in the 57-year-old’s pants to give the dying man a shot of salt water. Espadron then flushed the syringe down a toilet before calling the sheriff's office, deputies said.

Deputies said Sanchez was not breathing when they arrived to find him on the floor in Espadron's house, and Espadron said he tried to give Sanchez CPR before calling them to report a possible overdose. Sanchez was pronounced dead at 3:42 p.m, Pohlman said.

Sanchez and Espadron are believed to have known each other and investigating sheriff’s detectives said they suspect the two had done drugs together that day, rather than Espadron finding him on a street.

Espadron admitted to buying and using heroin in New Orleans earlier that day and disposed of the needle before returning to his house, deputies said.

Pohlman said Espadron, who was charged with obstruction of justice, may face more serious charges, possibly including negligent homicide, depending on the outcome of toxicology tests. Espadron was placed in St. Bernard Parish Prison on a $10,000 bond.
