WAGGAMAN, La. – Narcotics agents serving a search warrant at a home ended in a chase, crash and the arrest of a suspect, according the Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office.
Around 5 p.m., agents were executing a search warrant on Zed Smith, 41, at Smith’s home on Jeffer Drive, according to JPSO spokesman Col. John Fortunato, when Smith fled in an SUV.
“A pursuit ensued onto River Road headed towards Bridge City. As the pursuit continued, agents observed the suspect throwing what they believed to be drugs out of the window of the Expedition at numerous locations. At one point, prior to the location where impact occurred, the suspect struck a vehicle being driven by one of the detectives involved in the pursuit,” said Fortunato.
Smith lost control of his SUV and hit a car with a man inside in the 5100 block of River Road, according to Fortunato. Smith’s SUV and the car crashed through a fence and into a ditch.
Smith tried to run on foot, but was caught after a short struggle with agents.
The man in the car had to be freed from his vehicle and was treated for moderate injuries at an area hospital. Smith was treated for a minor laceration to his head, according to Fortunato.
