SLIDELL, La. -- A man who tried to rob a Slidell store is a dollar poorer after a botched armed robbery earlier this month, according to deputies.

The incident happened Aug. 6 just before noon at the Dollar General store at 123 S. Military Rd.

St. Tammany Parish Sheriff's Office deputies say the man entered the business three times that day. When a cashier asked if he needed help, the man went up to the counter and asked for change for a $1 bill.

As the cashier opened the drawer, the man brandished a knife and lunged toward the money. But because the cashier was able to slam the drawer shut, the man wasn't able to get to the cash, and so he "became startled and fled the store," according to the sheriff's office.

Officials say the man left his dollar bill on the counter in his escape.

The cashier suffered a cut on her palm, but her injuries aren't believed to be serious.

Deputies describe the perpetrator as a white man, about 5'9" tall and weighing 140 pounds. He was wearing a baseball hat, blue jeans and a blue sweatshirt. He was seen getting into a late model, blue Chevy pickup truck in the Winn Dixie parking lot nearby. You can see a picture of the man above.

If you know anything that can help investigators, call Crimestoppers at 504-822-1111 or 911.
