NEW ORLEANS -- Gunfire erupted along a major thoroughfare late Monday, leaving four people injured and backing up traffic for hours.
Shots rang out during rush hour at an already very busy intersection, forcing NOPD officers to close all eastbound lanes along South Claiborne as they investigated.
Shattered glass and bullet casings were scattered across the intersection of South Claiborne and Washington on Monday.
A few dozen yards away, in the neutral ground, was a smashed up car and a fallen light pole.
New Orleans police say someone in a truck pulled alongside the car and opened fire, causing the vehicle's driver to crash.
The incident left all four people inside the car with non-life threatening injuries. Two suffered from gunshot wounds, while the other two were hurt in the crash.
As detectives combed the scene for clues, NOPD officers kept all eastbound lanes of South Claiborne closed and rerouted traffic.
For now, it's unclear what led to this broad-daylight violence, and police have yet to identify any suspects.
