Reward increased in death of innocent bystander in Central City

The NOPD and Crimestoppers are announcing the increase in a reward for the shooters involved in an incident

NEW ORLEANS -- Officials announced an increase in the reward for information about a Central City shooting that killed an innocent bystander and injured five other people.

The new reward amount is $5,000. for information in the Sept. 11 shooting.

The incident near the intersection of First and S. Claiborne Ave.

Neighbors said Earnest McKnight, 63, was going to the corner store for a pack of cigarettes when shots rang out. A bullet hit him in the head, killing him.

"I think this is the largest mass shooting we've had in the city this year, with six people shot," said NOPD Superintendent Michael Harrison the day after the shooting. "We're looking into how this may be connected to any other crimes, any other acts of violence that have taken place in that area."

The announcement is set for 10 a.m. Friday.
