Trial date for accused shooter of Saints player Will Smith pushed back

NEW ORLEANS – An Orleans Parish judge pushed back the trial of the man accused of shooting former Saints player Will Smith.

According to the Advocate, Cardell Hayes’ trial is now set for early December.

Criminal District Judge Camille Buras said the four-week delay from the Nov. 2 trial date was due to the unavailability of the first New Orleans police officer to reach the scene following the shooting April 9.

Hayes, 29, is accused of first-degree murder in Smith’s death, attempted murder in Racquel Smith’s shooting and two other charges in connection with a three-car wreck in the Lower Garden District that happened shortly before Smith’s death.
