NEW ORLEANS — Crowds gathered around the sand mandalas Friday that Tibetan monks have been working on all week in anticipation of the Dalai Lama’s arrival for several talks about New Orleans.

He spoke to a full room and while he shared some words of wisdom, he also talked about compassion as the way to happiness.

The Dalai Lama reminded those listening that even when they are suffering, they are not alone because everyone is a brother and sister.

Though he was giving advice about serious matters, his contagious laughter seemed to make its way into the room several times as he spoke.

People at the Convention Center were overwhelmed with joy over the Dalai lama's visit.

One woman said his visit came at just the right time considering last weekend's violent shooting that injured 20 people at a second line.

“I think it's amazing that he's spreading a message of peace, especially with the Mother's Day shooting and things like that,” Kelsey Murray said. “I think new Orleans could use some message of peace.”

“I think it's important for people to know more about Buddhaism since it's not a huge thing in this part of the world,” Ben Parker said.

The Dalai Lama will talk again Saturday at 1 p.m. at the Lakefront Arena.
