ST. CHARLES PARISH, La. -- A Destrehan High School teacher is facing charges for having sex with a student, according to law enforcement officials in St. Charles Parish and in the city of Kenner.
Kimberly Naquin, 26, a geography teacher at Destrehan High, was booked with felony carnal knowledge of a juvenile, a misdemeanor charge of prohibited sexual conduct between educator and a female student, and fugitive from another agency. St. Charles Parish Sheriff Greg Champagne confirmed Naquin is the daughter of St. Charles Parish School Board member, Dennis Naquin, who was selected board president for 2016.
The sheriff's office began investigating the case on Jan. 13. There were allegations of a female student and female teacher having a sexual relationship, according to a statement from St. Charles Parish Sheriff's Office. The information came from a family member of the student.
Detectives interviewed the student who said she had a sexual relationship with Naquin. The student said the relationship began in September 2014 and continued until August 2015.
The said most of the sexual encounters occurred at Naquin's home in Kenner and some incidents occurred at Destrehan High School and a home in Destrehan.
"The school system is fully cooperating with the Sheriff's Office," said a statement from Stevie Crovetto, director of public information of St. Charles Parish Public Schools. "The teacher has been suspended without pay in accordance with district policy and procedures pending the outcome of an investigation. This is a personnel issue; therefore, no other information will be released at this time."
Naquin is being held on a $75,000 at Nelson Coleman Corrections facility in Killona, La.
She is also facing a charge in Kenner. Kenner Police have an arrest warrant for 10 counts of felony carnal knowledge of a juvenile. Kenner Police Chief Michael Glaser said Naquin will be arrested by Kenner authorities once she makes bail in St. Charles Parish.
This is not the first time allegations of a sexual relationship between faculty and students at Destrehan High has surfaced. In 2014, two other teachers, Shelley Dufresne and Rachel Respess, were arrested in connection with having sex with students. The incident sparked national attention.
Dufresne was facing a felony count of carnal knowledge of a juvenile for an alleged sexual encounter with the young man at a home in Montz. Dufresne later pleaded guilty to felony obscenity for having sex with the student, but her conviction was changed to a misdemeanor.
Dufresne and Respess could still face charges in Jefferson Parish related to a three-way sexual encounter with the same 16-year-old student. Police say that encounter took place after a Destrehan High School football game in Jefferson. The two women were booked in Jefferson Parish, but the district attorney's has not determined whether to file formal charges.
