Jefferson Parish school board unanimously votes to bring back recess

KENNER, La. -- The Jefferson Parish Public School Board unanimously voted Thursday to bring back recess.

The move comes after parents of students at Walter G. Schneckenburger Elementary spoke out against campus officials, who made the change this academic year in order to add more teaching time.

It is now mandatory for all K-5 schools to have at least 15 minutes of recess daily.

"School is number one, I agree on that," said Veeda Payne, whose grandson attends the school. "But what they're trying to do to elementary, little children, is crazy."

JPPSS previously released a statement supporting the school’s decision, but after feedback from parents decided a meeting was needed.

School board members said the change is effective immediately and they hope to see the rule being implemented as early as next week. They added that it is up to the principal where they want recess to fall during the instructional day.
