ST. CLAIRSVILLE, Ohio (AP) — An Ohio police chief accused of snooping on the woman who bore twins for actors Sarah Jessica Parker and Matthew Broderick says he entered the woman's home because he saw the basement door wide open.

The statement comes from audio tapes played Thursday at the trial of suspended Martins Ferry Chief Barry Carpenter. The tapes come from Carpenter's interrogation in which he said he entered Ross' home when he saw the open door, saw some personal items inside and then secured the home.

Prosecutors say Carpenter entered Ross' home in Martins Ferry in May and took items that identified her as the couple's surrogate. He and the police chief from neighboring Bridgeport are accused of scheming to sell the stuff to paparazzi.

The surrogate, Michelle Ross, is also testifying Thursday.
